What PADI scuba certification means

Most new divers start with PADI Open Water Diver. That is the entry-level certification that teaches the foundations: how to use your gear, communicate underwater, plan a dive, and stay safe and comfortable. Once you are certified, you can dive with a buddy within the limits of your training.

How certification works (simple version)

  • Knowledge learning (the basics and safety concepts)
  • Skills practice (hands-on training with an instructor)
  • Open water dives (real dives where you apply what you learned)

Why the quarry is a great place to learn

Quarry training gives you real underwater experience in a controlled setting. It is ideal for building comfort, buoyancy skills, and confidence before branching out to other dive locations.

What you will do during training

  • Clear water from your mask
  • Recover and clear your regulator
  • Practice buoyancy basics (this is the "secret sauce")
  • Learn simple underwater communication and problem-solving

How long does it take?

Timelines vary based on scheduling and conditions, but many students complete certification over a handful of sessions. If you are trying to plan around work, weekends, or travel, we will help you map out a schedule that makes sense.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Water bottle
  • Warm layers (quarry temps can surprise people)
  • Any required paperwork (we will tell you exactly what you need)
